"Solvitur Ambulando" (It is solved by walking )--St. Augustine

I'm an adult-onset athlete who has been trying to lose weight through diet and exercise. In my quest to live a healthier lifestyle, changing my exercise routine has been easier than changing my diet. Along this journey I've discovered that I'm mildly allergic to wheat. If you've never tried to eat wheat-free, you've not noticed that wheat is in almost everything! I've been eating wheat-free for almost a year, although I certainly have not achieved a gluten-free lifestyle.

Losing a substantial amount of weight is a tremendous challenge. I have to keep in mind that the journey is more important than the destination. Change isn't achieved overnight, and the path is strewn with hazards. Some days are good and I make substantial progress, and some days the dragon comes out and breathes fire on me. I may be dragon toast, but I am not turning around.

How far would you drive for a sandwich?

Among the other impossibly crazy things I did this summer...

I drove 402 miles, in just over 6 hours, for a sandwich. Now, to put this in perspective, there are times when I want to go to lunch with a friend, and she doesn't want to drive 15 minutes across town-- she thinks it's too far. So maybe it's just a matter of perspective. If I'm willing to drive 6 hours for a sandwich, every restaurant in the state seems close.

The particular sandwich that aroused such wanderlust was from… Continue

Udi's Gluten Free Bread Inspires a Road Trip

Several weeks ago I was cruising the gluten-free bread selections in the freezer case at Whole Foods. That day there were loaves of bread that I'd never seen before, a white sandwich bread and a whole grain bread from a company called Udi's. I decided to give it a try. I'll confess that I wasn't terribly optimistic, because most of the gluten free breads I've tried land more on the terrible end of the taste spectrum. I'd never eaten a gluten free bread that didn't require toasting before becomin… Continue

Foodies Rule, Fat Girls Drool

In what I can only guess is a cost-cutting measure, Christine's column and blog have been canceled. Read the post here. I'm sad. Even though I've never met her, I consider Christine my friend. Maybe this means I just have questionable standards for what friendship means-- for example, wouldn't you want to be able to contact your friends in some way other than the public commons that is a blog? Anyway, it is… Continue

Gluten-Free + High Altitude = Worst. Cake. Ever.

This weekend I attempted to bake a gluten-free cake. I wasn't intimidated. In my previous wheat-eating life, I attained mastery over a few tricks needed to bake a successful cake at altitude. I'm not going to land a job at Charm City Cakes, of the "Ace of Cakes" TV show fame... but my friends and family have enjoyed & requested cakes from me. Lately they have been cake-deprived because I haven't embraced baking since I eliminated wheat from my diet.

Just before the holidays I went to a part… Continue

All I want for Christmas is a Magic Fridge

Dear Santa,
I've been a good girl this year. I've changed my diet, worked out for days, and lost about 30 pounds. Would you please bring me a healthy Magic Fridge? (pretty please??)
Your Admirer,
Lisa

I want a Magic Fridge for Christmas. You might remember the magic fridge from the TV commercial during the 2006 Super Bowl-- look here: Magic Fridge. A guy puts his refrigerator on a rotating platform to hide beer from his f… Continue
