Former Santa Fe Desert Chorale singer Janet Andrew sent classical music critic Craig Smith this photo from a local grocery store in the Chicago area, where she now lives. It seems proper knowledge of chile — with an "e" — and of the village of Hatch, green chile's heart and center, hasn't arrived in the M…

First, I want to make this perfectly clear: I LOVE animals. I love bunnies and chicks and dogs and kitties and even pigs and cows. They can be cute, and I don't deny that. But I also
eat animals, which means that sometimes, what's cute can also be incredibly delicious.

I'm leery of packaged salad dressings, organic or otherwise. As a general rule, vinaigrettes of the big-brand ilk have a ubiquitous blah quality that never seems to change, no matter what temperature they're served at. The viscosity of something like Hidden Valley Italian Vinaigrette is akin to coagulated sheets of baking gelatin, and whatever "herbs" one finds end up sticking to your mouth like an overnight teeth-whitening strip. Most organic dressings taste no different to me, but I have a fee…

Today was the last day of the 21st Annual Fiery Foods & BBQ Show at Sandia Casino in Albuquerque, and boy, was it a FLAMIN' HOT affair. More than 200 exhibitor booths offered over 1000 products that spoke to the spicier side of life, and despite a slumping economy, the chile…

Not the saloon, silly pants. We're talkin' chocolate! The candy fairy informed me today that the New Mexico Environmental Law Center has been hoarding sweets, but for a very good reason. The Center recently unveiled the Justice Bar, an organic dark-chocolate treat with other goodies created in small batches by Santa Fe confectioners. The base chocolate, a fair-trade product provided by sweetearthchocolates.com, is mixed either with Chimayo red chile and Alamogordo pistachios or just a hint of mi…
